Setup
In order to work through this program, you will need to setup the following programs. If you run into any trouble or have questions, please contact the Jumpstart organizing team.
DMP Assistant Setup
DMP Assistant is a platform that we will use to create a data management plan (DMP) for the series. To use the DMP Assistant, you will need to create an account:
Go to the DMP Assistant Website: https://dmp-pgd.ca/
Fill out your first and last name, email, organization (University of Victoria), and then choose a password. You should receive an email confirming your successful account setup, and now you’re good to go!
R and RStudio Setup
We will be using R and RStudio to handle data manipulation and exploration. R is the coding language that we’ll be using, and RStudio is software that makes running R more user-friendly. In order for everything to work correctly, you will need to download both separately.
Downloading R and RStudio

Installation instructions
For detailed instructions providing video walkthroughs of how to download R and RStudio for both Mac and Windows, visit UVic’s Digital Scholarship Commons.
Borealis Setup
On the final day of the Jumpstart, we will be doing a hands-on demonstration of a data deposit using the demo instance of the Borealis data repository. In order to do this, you’ll need to create an account on the demo instance:
Go to this website: https://demo.borealisdata.ca/dataverse.xhtml
Follow the steps in this document, which will walk you through how to do this based on whether your institution is a participating member of Borealis or not: https://learn.scholarsportal.info/all-guides/borealis/user-accounts/
